BackgroundIn medieval poetry, Purgatory was referred to as sweet misery. Golfing often feels like that; acts of difficulty while obtaining something wonderful. We decided to name our golf course Purgatory as an idyllic place for golfers to test their limits. According to religious mythology, Purgatory is the place where souls pay for their earthly mistakes so they can gain entry to heaven. The name conjures images of overcoming obstacles to achieve eternal happiness. Once you play golf at Purgatory, you will understand! Purgatory is a rewarding course at many skill levels, from the high handicapper, to the scratch golfer. Purgatory Golf Club is built on 218 acres (many golf courses are built on only 150 acres). There are a minimum of six sets of tees at each hole. From the far forward tees, the course is a short 4,600 yards. But when played from the Purgatory tees, the course is a brutal 7,700 yards long, making it the longest course in Indiana (and the longest, non-mountain par 72 in the world!). But don't worry; there are at least 4 sets of tees between these two yardages to test your abilities! Purgatory has over 125 bunkers. These bunkers are filled with white sand, made of crushed limestone, a rare golfing site in Indiana. Many of the bunkers are outside the most rewarding line to the cup. There are some exceptions. At the 16th hole, large bunkers line the fairway and surround the green. On the 4th hole, the bunkers only protect the green as trees outline the fairway. But the most memorable is Hells Half Acre --the 17th hole--where a par three is surrounded by two acres of bunkers, making the green an island in a sea of sand. At Purgatory, you will quickly learn that it is easier to hit your ball out of a bunker than out of the tall grass. Dividing most of the fairways are roughs consisting of tall prairie grasses, including high fescue grass. Not all Golfing TormentDue to Purgatory’s larger size, the course offers a greater sense of privacy. The distance from the center of one fairway to the center of another is twice what you will find at most courses. Tee times are spaced further apart too, and are never double-booked. At Purgatory, you will truly feel like you’re outside the realms of the real world. Besides the facilities at the pro shop, there are also three bathrooms out on the golf course, you will never go more than four holes without passing one. Practice makes perfect. Now you perfect your game by practicing on either our 7,000 square foot practice putting green or on a separate 10,000 square foot chipping and pitching practice green. Our practice range is over three football fields long, with a bent grass teeing area that is 100 yards wide and 40 yards deep. Let us fill a cooler for you with your favorite beverage, and off you go to your most memorable round of golf in Indiana! |
