Golf Magazine Gives Purgatory an Honorable Mention
for U.S. Open
In the June 2002 issue of Golf Magazine, they gave
Purgatory an Honorable Mention as a candidate to host the U.S. Open. We were
thrilled, since the other candidates listed were quite prestigious.
“ . . . There are plenty of worthy candidates out
there. The public courses described below all have golf courses strong
enough to host the national championship, should they decide to apply for
“entry” (it’s
generally up to the courses to make the first move, thought the Bethpage
Open was the USGA’s idea.)
The article then goes on to list the following
courses:
- Torrey Pines (South Course)
- Lost Canyons
- Spyglass Hill Golf Course
- Sunriver Resort, Crosswater Club
- Whistling Straits
- Cog Hill No. 4 (Dubsdread)
- The Legends at Capitol Hill (The Judge)
- The Tradition at Royal New Kent
- Bulle Rock (South Course)
- The Dunes
- Kiawah Island Resort (Ocean Course)
- Concord Resort (Monster)
Honorable Mention, in order, were:
- Sandpiper Golf Course
- PGA West (TPC Stadium Course)
- Purgatory Golf Club
- Karsten Creek
- Longaberger Golf Club
- Arcadia Bluffs
They went on to say this about
Purgatory:
“This 7,754-yard course is dotted with more than 130
gaping sand pits filled with crushed white brimstone. Make that
lime-stone. Category: Mid-range daily-fee; $65.”
Beyond Bethpage, Taking the Open to public
venues is a worthy goal--and there are plenty of worthy candidates;

We appreciated the compliment!

that discussed golf in the Indianapolis area. Link to
